In fact, many of today's most chosen child names, including the most popular modern girl names, reveal a distinctly traditional streak. This article will look at the ten most popular girls names of the past ten years, as listed by the Social Security Administration, explore their meanings and when they came into vogue among parents.

10) Ashley - A two part ("aesc" and "leah") Old English name pairing that means "dweller near the ash tree forest," Ashley originated as a boy's name in Great Britain, but soared in popularity in the seventies as a modern girl's name in the US.

9) Elizabeth - The popularity of this name goes back over a hundred years, as it was the sixth most popular name for girls back in the 1900's. It's faded a little bit since then, but this Hebrew-derived baby girl name, which means "God is my oath," remains popular decade after decade.

8) Samantha - It's thought that this feminine variation on the biblical male name Samuel, which means "name of God," was first introduced in the southern United States. It gained popularity in the 50s and has only slid slightly from its mid-80's peak as a popular modern girl name.

7) Isabella - a Spanish version of the perennially popular Elizabeth ("God is My Oath") was itself an often-used name back in the late 1800's. It didn't rank as high throughout most of the 1900s, but gained steam in the 1980s and exploded in the 90s, becoming one of the most popular modern baby names, with no end to its climb in sight -- except maybe the number one spot.

6) Abigail - this is another modern baby name that was relatively popular decades ago, particularly in the early 1900s. Derived from the Hebrew name Avigayil, meaning "father of exaltation," this name has only recently started to descend from the list of most beloved modern girl names after reaching unparalleled peaks in the mid 1990s.

5) Hannah - one of most frequently chosen baby girl names in the 1880s, Hannah, a name that means gracious and full of mercy, never really suffered the low points of many of the names on this list, then went on to steadily gain traction every decade on from the 1960s, reaching the top 10 in the mid 1990s.

4) Olivia - is it a coincidence that parents in record numbers began naming their daughters Olivia a decade or so after Olivia-Newton John entranced the nation as the star of movies like "Grease?" Maybe everyone just decided they liked Olive Trees again, huh? In any case, Olivia is a wildly popular modern baby name.

3) Emma - the third most popular female name of the 1880s rode a sideways "C" curve through much of the 1900s, but made a stunning comeback starting around the 1990s to find itself back at the third most popular modern baby name for girls.

2) Madison - This modern girl name goes way back to the Middle Ages, from the always-awesome (who wrote this article?) boy's name Matthew, which got shortened to "Mad" as a nickname, then extended to its current form for baby girls. It barely registered on the charts in the last century until a sudden surge began in the 1980s.

1) Emily - a top 100 name in the 1880s, stayed in the top 250 throughout the 1900s, climbing a steep path towards the top starting in the 1960s, it reached the top spot in 1996 and held onto it until 2007, more than enough to give it the crown as the most popular modern girl name of the last decade.

Preparing a new room for baby is always challenging, but especially so if you are living in a small space. Here are some tips for carving out some special spaces for baby in your home.

Where will the baby sleep?

In a small apartment there is little space for an actual nursery. The AAP recommends that babies breastfeed for at least the first 6 months. To make it easier, many families are choosing various ways of sharing a bedroom with their babies. Co-sleeping or the family bed is an option some choose. Other parents wish to have their own sleeping space while still having baby nearby and choose to sidecar either a bassinet or a crib to their bed. Some parents go a step further and find a corner of the bedroom for baby's crib, a comfortable place to sit for feedings, and a dresser. If baby is going to share your room, a sibling's room, or a guest room, you can find smaller cribs or cribs that have drawers attached. Some parents have even discovered that their walk-in closet was a perfect place for baby's crib, nice and dark to help promote longer sleep, and still really close for night-time feedings.

Where will baby get dressed and where will you keep the clothes?

One of the biggest space challenges when it comes to making room for baby furniture is having a separate dresser and changing table. Many parents are purchasing a contoured changing pad that can attach to the top of a lower dresser, then using the dresser to store everything, keeping diaper changing things in the top drawer, and clothes in the lower drawers. So, what's our final advice? Sounds like sleep sacks can be a valuable part of a varied range of tools to help keep your baby safe and warm at night, and that their benefits can extend into the daytime provided you're willing to accept certain limitations. Of course, every baby, every parent and home create different circumstances, so talk to your friends and family, and experiment in small steps until you've figured out a sleep sack strategy that's right for you and your child.

After months of taking care of your baby while she was in the womb, now comes the hard part: caring for your child in the real world. Part of your care will involve clothing your new baby. Newborn baby clothes are certainly cute to look at, but when it is time to decipher the confusing system that is newborn sizes, cuteness can go right out of the window.

For your son's newborn baby clothes, first consider his birth weight. Most babies will be between six and nine pounds upon delivery, but will quickly put on weight. For babies at the high end of the size scale, who are close to nine pounds and long for their age (20 inches or longer), you might want to skip the newborn sizes and go straight to 0-3 months. Even babies that fall squarely into the "average" newborn size category won't stay there for very long, so jumping up a category to 0-3 months is never a bad idea.

Some babies are also born smaller than 6 pounds, whether due to nutritional issues during pregnancy, earlier than expected delivery, multiple births or any number of occurrences. When this occurs, parents should invest in a few preemie pieces of newborn baby clothes for the first few weeks of the baby's life. After that, your baby will probably be able to move into newborn sizes or zoom straight into the 0-3 months category.

A piggy bank makes a great gift -- and it's even more precious if you've made or personalized it yourself. Use these expert tips to create one of two different kinds of piggy banks for the new baby in your life!

Painted Glass or Pottery Piggy Banks

Unfinished banks are a sturdy and classic option for a DIY piggy bank. They can be purchased at craft stores for under $20 and come in an assortment of sizes, shapes, and designs! To finish your bank with your own loving and personalized touch, follow these tips:

Choose a variety of high-quality, acrylic paints and brushes. Cover the piggy bank completely with your choice of design, and use at least three coats for the best coverage.

After the paint has dried, apply a coat of clear craft enamel. Check for thin spots or cracks, and reapply if necessary.

Larger piggy banks allow for a wide variety of pottery painting options. Design ideas for your bank include putting the baby's name on one side of the bank, including baby's features for the pig's face (same color of eyes, hair, or a dimple), or using colors that represent baby's home sports team or complimentary nursery hues. With enough thought and care, you can create a pig that's just as sweet as the newborn it's made for!

Papier-Mache Piggy Bank

If you're confident in your ability to start from scratch, a papier-mache bank is a great DIY baby gift. These directions, adapted from Enchanted Learning, are the perfect way to create one!

Create a thin paste from one equal parts flour and water and stir into 4 cups of boiling water. After allowing it to simmer for three minutes, let it cool.

Tear long strips from newspaper or brown paper bags and dip them into the paste.

Apply two to three layers of the dipped strips over the entire surface of an inflated balloon. For best results, choose a balloon that fits the size of your bank.

After the balloon has dried (approximately 3 days), insert a needle through the paper to pop the balloon.

Attach sections of egg carton to the balloon in four spots (one each for the legs and a snout.) Attach with masking tape. (For extra durability, you can choose to reinforce the legs and snout by applying another layer of papier-mache strips and allowing them to dry an additional three days, as well.)

Now you're ready to decorate your piggy bank! Paint it with tempera paints or cover the entire pig with torn-up bits of colored tissue paper affixed with the thin paste solution. Add extra touches by drawing facial expressions and decorate with markers, glitter, beads, and a pipe cleaner tail. Don't forget to cut a slit in the top for the money to be placed!

Whether you choose a bank that's been partially created, or you take the option of making a completely DIY piggy bank, your baby will love this unique way to save for the future.

Baby Diaper Cake: Simple DIY

Take equal parts of fun, creativity and love, sprinkle in few dashes of humor, then roll it all up and you've got the basic recipe for a DIY baby diaper cake. While a cake made out of baby diapers may not be the first choice of an expectant mother's sweet tooth cravings, a baby diaper cake is sure to be an appealing and useful gift that the mom-to-be can devour to the last "crumb."

Functional, practical and thoughtful, a baby diaper cake can serve as a towering centerpiece on the baby shower gift table and help to provide a fun atmosphere for the celebration. Making a baby diaper cake is easier than one might think. Follow these simple instructions and you'll be "baking" your baby diaper cake in no time.

Assemble the ingredients. A good chef assembles all the ingredients needed for their dish before firing up the mixer. To make your baby diaper cake, gather up the following list:

40-60 newborn diapers (cloth or disposable)

A bag of rubber bands

Decorative ribbon at least 1-inch wide (and any other decorative items you wish to use)

Large baby bottle and/or baby lotion bottle

Sturdy platter or cardboard for the base

Trinkets and toys such as pacifiers, baby socks, rattles, etc.

Roll the diapers. Unfold and tightly roll the diapers into a cylinder shape and secure with a rubber band. Depending on the size of your baby diaper cake, you may want to enlist some extra wrists to help you out with step.

Make the base tier. Assemble the bottom tier of your baby diaper cake by placing the large baby bottle or bottle of lotion in the center of your base platform. Stand six to eight rolled diapers arranged in a circle around the bottle and secure together with a large rubber band. Arrange a second circle around the first, again securing the finished circle with a large rubber band. Finally, arrange a third circle around the first two and secure tightly with the decorative ribbon. Congratulations, your bottom layer is complete.

Make the second tier. Follow the same instructions as the base layer of your baby diaper cake, stopping after the second circle. There should still be a portion of the large baby bottle or baby lotion bottle in the center to help form your inner circle.

Top it off. Finish your baby diaper cake construction by making a top tier of six to eight diapers arranged in a circle and secured tightly with a rubber band.

Decorate. Hide any rubber bands on the outer layers of your baby diaper cake using the decorative ribbon. Attach any toys, bibs or other items you'd like to add as gifts to the cake. You are now ready to display and serve.
