After months of taking care of your baby while she was in the womb, now comes the hard part: caring for your child in the real world. Part of your care will involve clothing your new baby. Newborn baby clothes are certainly cute to look at, but when it is time to decipher the confusing system that is newborn sizes, cuteness can go right out of the window.
For your son's newborn baby clothes, first consider his birth weight. Most babies will be between six and nine pounds upon delivery, but will quickly put on weight. For babies at the high end of the size scale, who are close to nine pounds and long for their age (20 inches or longer), you might want to skip the newborn sizes and go straight to 0-3 months. Even babies that fall squarely into the "average" newborn size category won't stay there for very long, so jumping up a category to 0-3 months is never a bad idea.
Some babies are also born smaller than 6 pounds, whether due to nutritional issues during pregnancy, earlier than expected delivery, multiple births or any number of occurrences. When this occurs, parents should invest in a few preemie pieces of newborn baby clothes for the first few weeks of the baby's life. After that, your baby will probably be able to move into newborn sizes or zoom straight into the 0-3 months category.
No matter how large or small your baby is upon delivery, the best strategy for purchasing newborn baby clothes is to have a diverse collection of sizes and to plan ahead. Your baby will double in size in the first few months of her life, so items that are anywhere from newborn to 6-9 months are appropriate for the first half-year of baby's life.
